curriculum vitae

Markus Albrecht studied chemistry in Würzburg, where he entered the research team of Prof. Gerhard Erker for his Diploma-thesis. After following Erker to Münster he obtained the Dr. rer. nat. in 1992 with a thesis entitled „Dimetallische Zirconium/Aluminium Komplexe – Synthese stabiler Verbindungen mit planar tetrakoordiniertem Kohlenstoff“. The subsequent postdoctoral stay at UC Berkeley (Prof. Kenneth N. Raymond) was scientifically focusing on “Synthesis and coordination chemistry of macrobicyclic triscatechol ligands”. After return to Germany he did his habilitation from 1993-1997 in association with Prof. Hans-Joachim Knölker at the University of Karlsruhe.

At this time, he started working in the field of helicate chemistry and self-assembly. The title of the habilitation thesis was „Alkyl-verbrückte Brenzkatechin-Derivate: Neue Bausteine für Metall-gesteuerte Selbstorganisationsprozesse”. From 1997 until 2002 he was Privatdozent in Karlsruhe and since 2002 he is professor of Organic Chemistry at RWTH Aachen. He received the ADUC Jahrespreis für Habilitanden in 1996 and the Landeslehrpreis Baden-Württemberg in 2002. Between 1998 and 2001 he had a Heisenberg-fellowship of the DFG. He is Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Inclusion Phenomena and Macrocyclic Chemistry and advisory board member of “Chemistry Letters”.
